Torpey

Rock // Tulla, Clare

Born in Tulla Co. Clare, Torpey grew up surrounded by music thanks to his mother, Kate Purcell, singer with the Grammy-nominated band Cherish The Ladies. He started learning the piano at the age of five and, in his early teens began learning his favourite pop songs by ear. At fifteen, inspired by bands like, Oasis, R.E.M and The Arctic Monkeys he picked up a guitar and started writing. His twenties saw him gigging locally, honing his craft with a residency in ‘Dromoland Castle’. This time also saw the expansion of his writing influences to include contemporary acts, like, Bon Iver, David Gray and Big Thief. For the last five years he has been working as a sound engineer, working with the likes of traditional music icons ‘Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill’ and Nollaig Casey, rock band ‘Hermitage Green’, amongst many others across traditional and contemporary genres. His work has also seen him work in T.V, working on different projects for RTE, TG4 and Eurosport.

Last year saw the release of Torpey’s debut EP ‘Why Won’t The World Stop Turning?’, launched to a sold out crowd in Little Whelans. It was released independently, seeing airplay from a range of stations including, RTE Radio 1, RTE 2FM, Today FM, 98FM, Corks 96FM, Clare FM, Dublin City FM. As well as press coverage from Hot Press, RTE Entertainment, Otherside Reviews, Jace Media Music, The Beat. The EP has amassed over 30,000 streams.
