Smokey

Born and raised in Ballybrack, South Dublin, Smokey has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices rising out of Ireland’s underground rap scene — a sharp storyteller shaped as much by community spirit as the grit and chaos of suburban life.

Raised between Inagh Court and Cromlech Fields, Smokey’s early world was soundtracked by euro trance leaking from estate windows, traveller kids MCing outside local shops, and French hip-hop records spun endlessly by his father. By his teens, inspired by the lyricism of artists like Nas, he had begun crafting his own vivid, street-level narratives — documenting the people, places and contradictions surrounding him with equal parts humour, honesty and razor-edged detail.

Following years spent working across Dublin’s creative scene — from artist management and event curation to label work and grassroots community projects — Smokey has become a respected figure both onstage and behind the scenes. His collaborative spirit has seen him work alongside artists including Ahmed, With Love, Rory Sweeney, members of Cable Boy, and Strange Love of Negro Impacto, while also co-directing 2025’s Clash At The Quays festival edition.

Musically, Smokey blends introspective storytelling with sharp-tongued charisma and unmistakable Dublin wit. Tracks like Ronseal live precisely in an emotional blind spot, turning passive-aggressive silences and social fracture into something oddly anthemic. Ronseal captures the strange fragility of modern adult friendships; how closeness can dissolve through pride, distance, social drift and unspoken resentment rather than any single dramatic collapse. Smokey documents that erosion with remarkable precision.
