Small Church took shape in the Music Society at the Art college they were all attending. There, a shared focus on texture, tone, and atmosphere came together into a singular sound.
This sound was defined around a grungy and distorted bass line, dreamy rhythm guitar, and a synth lead using the unconventional “Seaboard” which glissandos, vibratos, and oscillates, all combining to create a distinct atmosphere throughout their discography.
It is a Grunge and Shoegaze mix with Indie and Alt-rock influence utilising counterpoint melody in its microtonal lead riffs and driven by a collective focus on contrasting velocity and tonal texture.
Vocalist Andreea Mocanu brings an ethereal quality in the softer moments, but has the range to launch into
explosive crescendos when the musical moment demands it. Her lyric writing and vocal delivery carry a raw vulnerability —beginning small and meditative, and building into cathartic theatrics.
