Small Church

Grunge // Limerick City, Limerick

Small Church is an underground Limerick-based Irish indie-rock band formed during the COVID-19 pandemic by students at the Limerick School of Art & Design.

Blending grunge, shoegaze, indie, and alt-rock, the quartet crafts tracks filled with ethereal vocals, swirling synths, glissandos, crescendos, and driving grunge bass and drums.

What sets them apart in the vibrant Irish (and particularly Limerick) music scene is their dreamy yet explosive fusion: soaring synth leads that often mimic or replace traditional guitar solos, creating a lush, cinematic texture rarely heard in the more guitar-dominant or post-punk-leaning Irish acts.
Fronted by Moldovan born singer-guitarist Andreea Mocanu (also of PowPig), whose versatile voice shifts effortlessly from dreamy, otherworldly vulnerability to powerful, cathartic intensity, she delivers raw emotional depth wrapped in an “up-in-the-air” lightness—digging into negative emotions but with a measured touch.
The interplay of melodic or distorted bass progressions, dreamy rhythm guitar layers, and Seán Horgan’s lead synth work adds a modern, lighter twist on classic grunge (echoing influences like Hole or Garbage but with added ethereal shimmer and synth-driven expansiveness).

The band is completed by Seán Horgan (keys/synth), Killian Moran (bass), and Evan Forde

The name is a playful English translation of a band member’s Irish name, reflecting their humble, cocoon-like origins writing music in college with no gigs in sight. Emerging as “ones to watch” in the supportive Limerick scene, they have released singles like ‘Kill My Friends’, ‘I’m a Fool’, and ‘A Young Man’s Life’, along with EPs including *Fever Dream* and the more polished *Sock Puppets* (2025) featured in Hot Press. Known for dynamic live shows that build from quiet introspection to loud, immersive walls of sound, Small Church stands out by consciously aiming to sound “not quite the same as what’s out there,” bringing a fresh, synth-infused atmospheric edge to Ireland’s alt-rock landscape.
