Somewhere between the pomp of the stage and the quiet of the bedroom, Show Ponies are a folk-pop trio who are well and truly saddled-up. Formed after a chance reunion at a festival, Mia Kovacs (guitar/banjo/mandolin) Omar Aftab (guitar/banjo) and Eve Casey (violin) are a vocal triple-threat who channel catchiness and cosiness alike. Think CMAT listening to Sufjan Stevens, think Madra Salach with women, think Fleetwood Mac if the band members got on. The melodies smile. The arrangements giggle. And beneath their campfire cutesiness lies a balance of lyrical incisiveness and introspection. Reeling off a sold-out debut supporting Sitting Room Upstairs in Whelan’s, they are set to trot onto bigger and better things this year. And maybe munch on a carrot or two.
