RED ESKIMO

Red Eskimo are a three-piece group from Limerick, Ireland. Though difficult to categorise, their sound has often been described as ‘Lo-Fi’ and ‘melodic’ while comparisons have ranged from Sigur Ros to Dinosaur Jr., Radiohead to Arcade Fire. Band members Neil Delaney, Peter Delaney and Robert Carey, write songs that veer between indie and post rock sensibilities, blending guitars and bass, synthesizers, Indian harmonium, drum programming and vocal harmonies. Embracing the DIY ethic, Red Eskimo record, produce and release all their music as well as generating all their artwork, music videos and live projections.

The good ole Emerald Isle might currently be heavily snowed under in economic turmoil, but out of it a group called Red Eskimo are ensuring that our country’s artistic endeavour is as richly prosperous as it can be. The group’s distinct sound, shifting from the suave sexiness and dreamy grooves of latter-day Sonic Youth to the great atmospheric heights of the Arcade Fire, is consistent and equally impressive throughout. And credit due to RE, that initial feeling, one of impression, doesn’t cease. The Grey Death Billow should be celebrated for its creative depth and uniqueness in offering something promising, and ultimately exciting, to this country in times where we need it more than ever.

From the quirky cover illustration through the opening track, Red Eskimo’s understated but undeniable certainty about who they are and what they have made is evident. There is melodic low fi flow to the album, which is laced with gentle hooks at every rhythm break and subtle harmony. I could try and pick some highlight tracks, I have a couple, but mostly The Grey Death Billow is an album that warrants a straight through listen, several in fact. Red Eskimo’s debut is as smooth as a sea worn stone and as much of a pleasure to have close to hand.”
