Alternative folk artist Noelle O’Sullivan is set to release her powerful new single “Tumbleweed” on September 19, 2025, the lead track from her highly anticipated sophomore album "Rolling on the Inside".
The release will be marked by a free Culture Night performance at St John’s Theatre, Listowel, where the accompanying music video—shot by Fionnan Barrett and Luke Mahony—will also be unveiled.
Rooted in heartfelt storytelling and poetic lyricism, “Tumbleweed” serves as a poignant tribute to Philomena Lee and her son Anthony, whose story was portrayed in the Oscar-nominated film Philomena. Written and performed by O’Sullivan, the track reflects on the injustices suffered by women and children in Ireland’s Mother and Baby Homes, weaving historical weight into a deeply human narrative.
“Having watched Philomena, I felt deeply compelled to write a song conveying the devastation this lady and her son endured,” says Noelle. “It’s important to find new ways of telling this story so we, as a society, can evolve and understand the consequences of our actions. Tumbleweed is a tribute to Philomena, her son Anthony, and to all the women, children, and babies who suffered injustice at these institutions.”
Produced by Brian Casey at Wavefield Recording Studio, Cork, the single highlights the musical synergy between O’Sullivan and her collaborators. Noelle’s stirring vocals and acoustic guitar form the heart of the track, while Casey layers in electric guitar, keyboards, and bass to give the song depth and unexpected turns. The rhythm is carried by Anthony Noonan’s evocative drumming, grounding the shifting dynamics and adding urgency to the arrangement. Together, the trio have crafted a sound that balances fragility with strength, grief with resilience.
The final verse strips back to an almost haunting simplicity, ending with the poignant line “they would be heard”—a rallying call for remembrance and recognition.
