Nature Studies

Folk // Belfast, Antrim

Nature Studies is Dan Bardon. The name reflects a fascination with the wild thats taken him all over the world - tracking tigers, diving with sharks and throwing legendary parties - most recently for the colourful creatures of the Belfast underground.

Resolving to set out as a songwriter after experiencing something of an epiphany during an encounter with hemorrhagic dengue fever in South East Asia, he returned home to develop his craft - soon finding an affinity for blending acoustic instrumentation with dreamy, analogue atmospherics.

Recording for debut 'Sink a little Deeper' began in the attic of a dilapidated Dublin mansion. Circumstances were less than ideal as tracking was restricted to fifteen minute intervals between the clanging of the Rathmines clock tower - the ferocity of these interjections leading him to suspect its bells were forged in some infernal furnace.

Taking his production mobile, he drew upon an eclectic cast of musicians as he built rich arrangements in attics and studios across the UK and Ireland - piano, fiddle, hang and Jew's harp weaving their way around his eloquent, accented vocal and deft guitar lines. Warm layers of ambient swell infused the tracks with an ethereal air.

Post production took place on the front porch of a beach hut on India's Andaman Islands - where he'd chanced his way into a residency playing gigs and running raves under the stars. He went scuba diving with his guitar for the cover art before heading to Brighton Electric to do the final mix.

Since then he's made a name for himself as an accomplished and emotive performer - sending waves of soulful folkatronica crashing over jubilant dancers at his Ecstatic in the Attic all nighters in Belfast City centre.

Until now he's stayed well under the radar, but with a September release scheduled for 'Sink a little Deeper' Nature Studies is poised for full flight.
