From the west coast of Ireland, banjo player and singer Maggie Carty brings a soulful, rhythm-driven
energy to Irish traditional folk music. Now based in Naarm Melbourne, she offers a fresh perspective on
a century-spanning tradition. Rooted in Irish traditional music, her work weaves in Americana,
Australian folk, and modern roots music, blending evocative vocals with driving banjo rhythms to
create a sound that feels both deeply grounded and freshly reimagined. Coming from a multi-
generational musical family, Carty brings emotional clarity and rhythmic momentum to both traditional
and original material, breathing new life into old folk songs while honouring their origins.
Her debut solo album Ebb and Flow was awarded Folk Album of the Year 2025 by Folk Alliance
Australia and explores themes of emigration, identity, and the Irish diaspora through the lens of a
modern Irish woman living abroad. The album has received airplay on RTÉ Radio 1, ABC Radio, BBC
Radio 2, PBS, and Triple R, and features banjo, vocals, double bass, percussion, and didgeridoo,
reflecting both her Irish roots and her adopted home in Australia. Maggie has supported internationally
renowned artists including Altan, Daoirí Farrell, and Beoga, and has performed at major festivals across
Australia, Ireland, Europe, and the USA. Maggie Carty is a compelling new voice in folk music, known for
performances that balance deep traditional roots with a bold, contemporary sensibility. Her soulful,
rhythm-driven style creates a powerful connection with audiences across generations.
