Joe Maxi’s debut EP The Game was met with glowing reviews, with Click Roll Boom calling them "Dublin's 'New-age answer to Pixies,'" and praising their "riotous bombardment of whipping punk energy." Their raw intensity, described by Hot Press as a "delightful explosion of heavy guitars," is a hallmark of their sound. BBC Introducing NI, hosted by Gemma Bradley, played an instrumental role in developing the bands Belfast fanbase giving their track "The Game" an exclusive debut. Gemma Bradley's support on BBC Introducing NI helped the band reach new heights and expand their audience.
Their single "Butterfly" has been widely praised for its "chaotic and fearless exploration of contemporary experimental music," according to Headbanger HQ. The track also received airplay on BBC Introducing NI, which helped push their unique sound further into the mainstream. Additionally, their music has been featured on RTÉ 2XM , FM 104, Today FM, KCLR 96FM, John Barkers TILT and Queens Radio Belfast, where they’ve earned a strong following.
Their new single, “Athletic Manslaughter”, out March 27th, started on a rain-soaked walk home through Dublin, captured in a simple voice note that grew into the track’s core melody. The lyrics reflect what it’s like to exist as a working-class Irish person in the 2020s, feeling quietly outlawed, inspired by a phrase they came across while doom-scrolling: “athletic manslaughter,” originally used to describe a 1920 Irish hurling match. It stuck, becoming a way to describe that sense of pressure and struggle in everyday life.
This track is just the beginning for Joe Maxi. It sets the tone for what’s next, where each release pushes boundaries, tells stories rooted in identity and emotion, and marks the start of the band’s next chapter.
