EVERGREENband

Rock // Ireland , Wicklow

EVERGREEN are a London-based four-piece band led by Irish vocalist Sofia Tobin and guitarist Alex Dengate. The project began during one of Sofia’s recording sessions, when Alex was brought in as a session musician. A natural musical chemistry quickly emerged between them, laying the foundation for what would evolve into a deeper, collaborative project. With the later addition of bassist Josh Holiday and drummer Andrew Richmond, EVERGREEN took shape as a full band.

Sofia was born in Dublin and raised in the foothills of County Wicklow. She’s drawn to the conventions of Irish storytelling, particularly its use of song as a way of navigating grief, uncertainty, and connection.
Raw and evocative, the songs messages and stories are equal to their sound—lyrics written by Sofia, whose experience of grief in her early adolescence led to growing up with different families and in different places, shaping the emotional core of her work. She bares her own experiences without hesitation and greatly admires Sinead O’Connor for her uncompromising fearlessness. Her writing is also shaped by her early childhood, where Seamus Heaney’s poems seemed woven into the trails of the Wicklow Mountains. That lyrical connection to the land continues to ground her, with threads of Celtic mysticism running through her work.

Alex grew up in Chesterfield, where his dad’s record collection shaped his early musical life, from the Ramones to AC/DC. He is now based in London, having graduated from the University of Liverpool with a Music degree. Though shaped by louder and heavier influences, his playing reveals an understated musicality. Though they both arrived at music through very different paths, what became clear early on was the way their sensibilities could co-exist. Where Sofia leans into atmosphere and lyricism, Alex brings structure. Their music references the labyrinthine harmonies of Jeff Buckley and the purposeful drive of Led Zeppelin.

Now a four-piece, the band have made their mark on London’s established venues, including The Hoxton, Sebright Arms, The Old Blue Last, Shacklewell Arms, and SJQ Dalston, building a reputation for immersive, emotionally charged live performances.
