Carol Anne McGowan

Folk // Donegal

.Carol Anne McGowan is an Irish singer-songwriter and visual artist whose music weaves haunting melodies with poetic lyricism, creating an intimate world of emotion and atmosphere. Hailing from the remote, windswept landscapes of Donegal, McGowan’s work is deeply rooted in the natural world, often drawing inspiration from its beauty, stillness, and isolation.

With a voice described as both ethereal and earthy, McGowan crafts songs that are spare yet rich with feeling—echoes of traditional Irish folk blend seamlessly with modern minimalist arrangements. Her music, often compared to the likes of Lisa Hannigan and Vashti Bunyan, evokes a timeless quality.

In 2023, McGowan released Aer, an album born during the pandemic lockdowns. This work is a series of vocal experiments using only her layered and treated voice, creating compositions that evoke the sounds of church organs and keyboards.

More recently, McGowan has begun breathing new life into poems from the past, setting the words to music and shaping them into songs that feel both ancient and contemporary.
