God Knows + mynameisjOhn:
So, one day, a Zimbabwean Christian and an Irish pagan sit down with a pot of tea to discuss making an album. “Let’s change the game”, they said. And so it began.
God Knows has rapidly become one of the most electrifying souls in music in Ireland. Along with being the founding member of Shannon's 'Random Acts Of Kindness' collective, his unique MC fusion of grime, rap and spoken word has firmly established him as one of the most formidable front-men in the country.
mynameisjOhn grew up on the cold hard streets of Ennis in the West of Ireland, headphones on and hood up. He collected tapes, played basketball and entered radio competitions. Now he DJs and makes beats. He’s released 3 solo EPs, which both reference his grá for a dollop of hiphop, electronica, psych rock and straight-up paranoia.
Following on from 2013’s ‘The Struggle EP’ with producer Graeme S, God Knows and mynameisjOhn continue to keep things focused, pushing buttons and boundaries with intensity. ‘Rusangano / Family’ is the fruits of their labour, an 11 track album that cements the duo’s ongoing collaborative adventures. Exploring issues such as identity and belonging, the album delivers a hefty dose of honest double-edged lyricism over skewed soul samples, 808 beats and sliced-up breaks. Wearing their hiphop and electronic influences proudly on their sleeves, mynameisjOhn and God Knows aren’t an act willing to conform to the styles associated with their respective backgrounds. Instead of struggling with the idea of being different, they celebrate it. Sure the rules are only there to be broken. The release of the album in May has led to a wash of positive press reviews, along with an endorsement from Snoop Dogg after handpicking them for two support shows, along with Main Stage slots at Body & Soul festival and a national tour. Its only early days.
