CARRIED BY WAVES is the music moniker of Ronan McCann. Hailing from the Dundalk and based in Cork, McCann has gained a strong following with his unique brand of ethereal and experimental electro-pop. Venturing out of the home studio in January 2011 he came to attention of the country’s media, following a string of well received performances throughout the country. Most notably as part of the 'First Music Contact' tour and later the 'Hard Working Class Heroes' festival in Dublin. This run of shows was topped off in September 2011 with a slot at the 'Electric Picnic' festival. Irish music mag 'Hot Press' had this to say...

“There’s something totally beguiling about the musical musings of Carried By Waves, particularly the electronically doctored vocal of its mysterious conductor... a dreamy, astral treat” - HOT PRESS

2012 began with both 'Hot Press' & 'Heinekenmusic.ie' tipping Carried By Waves as "one to watch" and in July of the same year a debut album 'Softly Held Together' was released. The album was received positively and featured as Dan Hegarty's “album of the week” on 2FM. In addition, it ranked at No. 4 in a 2FM list of the “100 Irish albums of the year”.In promotion of Softly Held Together several live shows followed with various high profile Irish acts, such as R.S.A.G, Le Galaxie, Squarehead and Funeral Suits to name a few. Shortly after, a double A-Side single ‘Parting Speech’/Aviatophobia was released by Vienna-based record label 'Audio- Kult'. In January 2013 'Hot Press' once again featured 'Carried By Waves' in their “Hot For 2013 (30 Irish Acts You Must Hear”) list. Following a string of summer festival performances at Castlepalooza, Indiependence, Vantastival, Hard Working Class Heroes and Fading Light, McCann began work on a second album.

Work on what was to become the album "Resolute" continued on and off while McCann worked on other music and production side projects, such as Cork lo-fi guitar band Partisan Crowds (as bass player), and singer-songwriter Foxglove (as producer). While studying for a Masters Degree in Music Technology at the Cork School of Music, McCann completed mixing on Resolute in early 2016 and the album was released to critical acclaim on April 22, 2016, with positive reviews from The Thin Air, G-Man and Musician.ie among others. In addition, the album attracted considerable nationwide airplay and Carried By Waves was again featured among Dan Hegarty’s ‘albums of the week’.

'Softly Held Together' is without question one of the finest debut albums of 2012... many, many people are going to fall in love with this...beautifully crafted tunes" - DAN HEGARTY 2FM

"Softly Held Together is one of those albums that, just when you’ve got the songs figured out, they take you by surprise. A prime example is the chilled ‘Stranger Talk’, which hits you with such power just as you might be drifting off. Softly Held Together sounds fantastic". - THE POINT OF EVERYTHING

"Beautifully crafted electronic textures... an experimental form of electro-pop that's both innovative and accessible". THE SOUND OF CONFUSION (U.K)

"Carried By Waves songs are textured, layered & engrossing..They concoct a set of sounds that verge on euphoria” - WE ARE NOISE

"Atmospheric, glitchy...finely crafted" - THE METAPHORICAL BOAT

"Wonderful electronic pop music... fantastic... Gorgeous". - SWEAR I’M NOT PAUL

"The masterstroke is the blend of the electronic & the real, lending the music an overall vitality & humanity... the entire album chimes with an understated majesty... Richly textured & perfectly paced, this music ebbs and flows, swelling and breaking at just the right moment" - THE NEEDLE HITS THE GROOVE

"Beautifully lush electronics....sublime" - BELIEVE IN SOUND

U&I Music Magazine: 9/10

"Poignant songwriting lies at the epicentre of an electronic web, coolly coloured and shaded by McCann's pristine production capabilities. Previously masked in layers of effects, McCann's gentle vocals are subtly nudged to the fore, more than on any of his previous releases". - G-MAN WORLD

"Carried By Waves released an excellent album called ‘Softly Held Together’ in 2012. Four years on, he follows that with the highly impressive ‘Resolute’. You can hear the progression that he’s made in the interim, and it makes this album a pleasure to listen to. Calling this atmospheric wouldn’t encapsulate what he’s done on this album; seek it out and be enthralled". - Dan Hegarty 2FM
